My latest shopping victory is a jersey maxi from Max Studio that I got at T.J.Maxx for $25, marked down from its original $78. Best of all, I can wear it as a skirt or a dress—so that makes it an even better deal! I haven’t yet gone online to see if I can find it cheaper, but I doubt that’s possible. But I’m going to do it, just for fun. We call it the T.J.Maxx Challenge, and the idea was inspired by our editor-in-chief’s compulsion to do just that: price her best bargains and see if she in fact got the best deal possible (almost always the answer is yes!).
We did the same thing as part of our big October cover story, “Save even more at discount stores!” We sent our most stylish secret shopper to find the best stuff she could at T.J.Maxx and Marshalls and then we had our summer intern look to beat their prices. Here are some highlights:
The best deal we found was a pair of Alice and Olivia pants, originally $297, on clearance at T.J.Maxx for $20! The lowest price we found online was $250 at Nordstrom. (And no, the pants weren’t damaged or anything.)
Next best was a gorgeous Kate Spade dresss, originally $398, marked down to $60, also at T.J.Maxx. The next-best price we found was $200 at 6pm.com.
Other bargains included a Kate Spade cropped jacket, marked down from $478 to $100; a Michael Kors clutch, marked down from $218 to $100; Calvin Klein calf and patent peep-toe wedges, marked down from $119 to $40; and more.
