We tried and tried but couldn't beat the discount stores

My latest shopping victory is a jersey maxi from Max Studio that I got at T.J.Maxx for $25, marked down from its original $78. Best of all, I can wear it as a skirt or a dress—so that makes it an even better deal! I haven’t yet gone online to see if I can find it cheaper, but I doubt that’s possible. But I’m going to do it, just for fun. We call it the T.J.Maxx Challenge, and the idea was inspired by our editor-in-chief’s compulsion to do just that: price her best bargains and see if she in fact got the best deal possible (almost always the answer is yes!).

We did the same thing as part of our big October cover story, “Save even more at discount stores!” We sent our most stylish secret shopper to find the best stuff she could at T.J.Maxx and Marshalls and then we had our summer intern look to beat their prices. Here are some highlights:

The best deal we found was a pair of Alice and Olivia pants, originally $297, on clearance at T.J.Maxx for $20! The lowest price we found online was $250 at Nordstrom. (And no, the pants weren’t damaged or anything.)

Next best was a gorgeous Kate Spade dresss, originally $398, marked down to $60, also at T.J.Maxx. The next-best price we found was $200 at 6pm.com.

Other bargains included a Kate Spade cropped jacket, marked down from $478 to $100; a Michael Kors clutch, marked down from $218 to $100; Calvin Klein calf and patent peep-toe wedges, marked down from $119 to $40; and more.

What’s the best markdown you ever found? Let us know! And take the T.J.Maxx Challenge! Get the best deals you can there, and the see if you can find them cheaper online. Check out the October issue, on newsstands now!

In your October issue, you showed a pair of boots and a bag from TJMaxx on the inside front cover, and page 21. Can you possibly tell me the brand and style name/number of these items? Especially the boots! I MUST find them!

Hi Andrea! WISH we could help, but we can't! Most stuff at TJMaxx is only there for a short time... Gotta shop early and often!
Thanks for reading!

I'm not one to buy items from infomercials or anything like that but I came very close to purchasing the No! No! I wanted to believe it worked because the idea of not having to shave so much sounded so good. I was so happy to see that item featured in your November 2013 issue and it saved me a lot of money. The cons far outweighed the pros and I decided against it. I feel empowered now when I have to purchase not only big ticket items but really anything. I always check with Consumers Reports first and so far have been very satisfied with your recommendations. In fact, a new car is not too far off and I've already subscribed to your website for how to buy a new car and make sure you get the best price. (I can't remember the exact name) You are doing a great service for all consumers.Thank you!
