True beauty confessions

Whether you consider yourself a beauty cheapskate—one in 10 women do, according to ShopSmart's new national poll—or a product junkie, brand snob, impulse buyer, or an easy mark for beauty salespeople (another 40 percent combined), it's easy to overspend on makeup and skincare products.

When we surveyed more than 1,000 women nationally about their beauty-shopping habits, more than half told us they have spent more than $20 on a single item; 14 percent fessed up to spending more than $50.

Among other surprising stuff, we learned that...

Nearly half those surveyed are beauty cheapskates.

43% of women buy cosmetics only when they are on sale...

But 56% of women are missing out on some great deals and don't use coupons and discount codes to save money on cosmetics.

Most admit to being beauty-product hoarders.

61% of women have beauty products that are expired or that they no longer use.

20% have six or more unused or expired products hanging around.

Women tend to live with their mistakes.

33% of women say they have regretted a beauty purchase made in the past 12 months.

But only 5% return bummer beauty products!

The top makeup products women splurge on:

1. Foundation (including tinted moisturizers and BB creams)

2. Facial moisturizer

3. Concealer

And the No. 1 thing they cheap out on:

Lip gloss

Shop Smart is one of my favorite magazines. I save all my magazines for reference. When going shopping for something, I check the magazines for their opinion. I have given this magazine as a gift. Thank you.
