Best sunscreens to buy this summer

119000262_SSBLOG_healthandsafety_sunscreensBuying sunscreen is confusing. All those brands, all those SPFs…. So you’re probably wondering, can’t I just buy what’s on sale and be done with it? Sadly, it’s not that easy.

We test sunscreens every year, and this year we found that some don’t deliver as much SPF protection as they promise. So the standard advice is to buy SPF 30 or higher is out the window; this year the magic number is 40. The good news is that some of the cheapest brands we tested did the best.

Three store brands are great choices: Target’s Up & Up Sport SPF 50 (spray), Walmart’s Equate Ultra Protection SPF 50 (lotion), and Walgreens Continuous Sport SPF 50+ (spray).

For more about what to look for, click here and check out our July issue, which has more safe-sun info, plus advice on what to do to help heal a sunburn (oatmeal bath, anyone?), what to buy to help you heal faster, and what products to skip.

And here’s our writer (go, Nicole!) talking sunscreens on the "Today" show!

I’m slathering up and hitting the beach this weekend—weather permitting! What’s your favorite thing to do in the sun?
